It is Emancipation Day, marking the date 181 years ago when slavery was banned in the British Empire.
Assistant program manager at Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site on the edge of Dresden Brenda Lambkin says people may forget there was slavery in this area before that. "We didn't have a lot but there was slavery. Then Lieutenant Governor John Gray Simcoe passed an act that no new slaves can come in."
She says that means it was being reduced when the British Parliament banned it.
