Area MPP's are promising to continue to push the government to keep its promise to twin Hwy. 3 between Essex and Leamington after a fatal crash this week.
Essex MPP Taras Natyshak was looking to have the work included in the province's four-year highway plan in a motion made back in May, but it failed.
"You don't want to have to make the case through somebody having to suffer an injury or, God forbid, a fatality on this road to get them to understand it needs to be widened, but unfortunately it seems that's what it's going to take," says Natyshak. "I certainly don't want to make anything political out of this, but finish what you started. That's what my motion called for."
Chatham-Kent-Essex MPP Rick Nicholls doesn't see the Liberal government approving the construction anytime soon.
"They're wanting to put all their money more into the GTA and I see it as 'Let's play punish rural Ontario,'" says Nicholls. "The government needs to start paying attention to consistent fatalities in areas so that perhaps more work can be done."
The province is moving forward with the reconstruction of the highway from County Rd. 27 to County Rd. 34 this summer -- but isn't twinning the stretch.
