Police See Increase In Animal Euthanasia

In 2014 Chatham-Kent Police saw an increase in incidents involving physical force, but it wasn't the result of more tasing or weapons use.

Instead, officers experienced an influx of calls that involved using their weapons to put suffering animals out of their misery. These can include deer that have been hit by a car, or rabid raccoons.

Police Chief Gary Conn says these types of situations are their jurisdiction. However, for other animal-related incidents, there's another contact. "For example, if there's a stray cat or dog in the area, we would go investigate. But obviously the agency best suited for that would be the OSPCA."

Last year CK Police saw 16 more calls of this type compared to 2013.
