30,000th Last Post Echoes Worldwide

The playing of the Last Post took on special meaning as the local fire brigade in Ypres played the tribute for the 30,000th consecutive day.

The tribute was broadcast around the world including the headquarters of Chatham-Kent Fire Department.

"It's very emotional, I think every Canadian should go and see it to appreciate that people in Europe really understand that Canadians and the British and other countries came to their aid," says Suzanne Beecham, whose Grandfather was a Belgian freedom fighter who later settled in Chatham. "You'll see all the town people just before 8pm come out in the central part of Ypres and then walk to the Menin Gate."

The Belgians began the tradition in July of 1928 in honour of the 54,897 people whose bodies were never recovered.
