Striking workers at nine stores in southwestern Ontario could soon be joined on the picket lines by staff at 60 other stores.
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers union at Real Canadian Superstore and Zehrs Great Foods in Windsor, Kingsville, Leamington, Chatham and Sarnia walked off the job shortly after midnight Thursday morning. Workers at stores from London to Ottawa are set to join them on the picket line Sunday.
BlackburnNews.com attended the picket line at the Great Canadian Superstore on Walker Rd. in Windsor but was told all media inquiries were being referred to the union's head office in Cambridge. A message has been left for the union president.
Loblaw Companies Ltd., which owns the stores, says the stores are open, but the hours of operation have changed to 10am to 8pm.
The union and Loblaw are back at the bargaining table today. Key issues are wages, work schedules, benefits and limits on third party providers.
