Planting For Food Banks

Operators of local food banks are looking forward to more fresh produce as the spring planting and gardening season gets into full swing,

Brenda LeClair with Outreach For Hunger says local gardeners often donate surplus produce and some are planting extra specifically for food banks.

"We're getting that more and more. People are starting to think along those terms and it doesn't cost much," she says. "If you can plant an extra row -- great project. If you've got young kids, get them involved and our families who receive fresh produce love it."

As well, LeClair says recent changes that allow farmers to claim a tax credit for food bank donations has sparked some interest in the agricultural sector, although a number of area farmers have always been very generous.
