Exploring Asian Soy Markets

The federal government is hoping to put more money in soybean farmers' pockets, by helping researchers to develop better beans.

Essex MP Jeff Watson announced $225,000 for a research project, aimed at creating better smelling and tasting soy milk.

Lead researcher at the Greenhouse and Processing Crops Research Centre in Harrow Lorna Woodrow says the Canadian soy industry has a pretty good handle on tofu, but its milk needs some work. "Our roll in the quality program is to interact with the exporters, interact with their customers in Asia and Europe, try to identify what they're looking for, and translate that into quanitfyable tools that we can then use to evaluate the soybean varieties," explains Woodrow.

Watson says Canada has recently reached new trade agreements in Asia, so this is part of a plan to take advantage of access to those markets.
