Call First For Safety

Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope and a group of utility workers teamed up to promote Dig Safe Month and remind people to call and ensure they know the location of underground utilities before doing any digging.

Dan Foucault with Union Gas says a display of utility trucks and construction equipment is designed to remind not only construction workers, but non-professionals as well.

"The big one now that we want to target now is the homeowner, the weekend warrior thinks, 'I'm only putting a tree in but gas lines only have to be 15 in. deep," he says. "As construction has evolved things have changed, buildings have moved, properties have been bought, stuff has been torn down, so where (pipes and wires are) is not always off the front of the house."

There is now one number to call to arrange a free service to locate all underground utilities. For a link to the website, click here.
