Distracted Drivers Increasing

A week-long distracted driving campaign has left Chatham-Kent OPP officers convinced drivers are not yet getting the message about how dangerous it can be.

Provincial Constable Janine Belanger says three times as many charges were laid this year, compared to the same week last year.

"The distracted driving campaign started on Mar. 14 and it lasted until Mar. 20. During that time, Chatham-Kent OPP laid approximately 35 distracted driving charges," she says. "It doesn't seem like drivers are getting the message."

OPP also laid three careless driving charges that were distraction-related. Belanger says of the 288 people who died on OPP patrolled roads last year, 73 were related to driver inattention.
