Chatham-Kent is one of many municipalities concerned about the Energy East Pipeline.
Proposed changes would see oil sent through an existing natural gas pipeline that stretches from Alberta to Eastern Canada. In Ontario, it passes through from North Bay to Cornwall.
Now CK, along with other municipalities like Thunder Bay and Kingston, want to see TransCanada Pipelines Limited either build a new oil pipeline, or pay for a new gas line to meet demand.
Mayor Randy Hope says this threatens residents' safety and wallets. "You cannot jeapordize the natural gas supply system to the residents of Ontario, and levy costs to the residents when the oil industry should be picking up their own costs."
Council is being encouraged to sign letters made out to the National Energy Board regarding their concerns, showing the proposal could add $50 a year to the average home's energy bill.
