The Windsor Public Library is considering a review of its procedures after a woman streamed live sex acts online at two branches.
Director Chris Woodrow says staff suspected something was not right when they received complaints in January about a woman viewing inappropriate websites around children at the Riverside and Fountainbleu branches. There were also complaints about inappropriate pictures being taken. The woman was asked to leave, and the library called police but without witnesses and proof there wasn't much they could do. The woman hasn't returned.
Woodrow says it came to the library board's attention Monday there were videos of the woman online performing live sex acts. He says the first reaction was one of shock and the second was to call Windsor police back. Authorities have since launched an investigation and ask anyone with information to call 519-255-6700 ext. 4371 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 (TIPS). Woodrow says the staff are trained to deal with inappropriate behaviour and followed the existing procedures, but moving forward the library wants to ensure its environment is safer for families and children. "I'm sure the police will have some recommendations for us," he says. "When we receive those, we'll obviously review them and if we can, we'll put them into effect."
In the meantime, Woodrow urges any library patron who witnesses something inappropriate to alert staff. "I haven't dealt with anything like this," he says. "I guess in this day and age when the Internet is so prevalent, and WiFi is so prevalent, and mobile devices are in everyone's hands, it's not inconceivable that this kind of activity happens in other places. It's certainly the first for us."
