Draft Budget Goes Public

Chatham-Kent's 2015 draft budget sees a request for taxes to increase by 2.2%.

As agreed upon Monday, Chatham-Kent Council will now try to bring that number as close to 0% as possible.

Budget Chair Derek Robertson has been preaching council's ownership of the budget since the start. "At the end of the day if council wants to find a pathway to zero, we need to be the ones responsible and accountable to drive that pathway, deliver the solutions for the citizens and the taxpayers."

Staff also introduced a number of service cuts that could bring the increase down to 0%, including a number of recommended cuts from 2013 that were never approved. But council shot down those old reductions.

Up next are a number of closed session meetings, as well as the first community consultation meeting on January 27 in Dresden.
