Arenas Struggle With Low Attendance

Chatham-Kent is looking to improve arena revenue after a report that shows ice rink usage at just 62%.

Shuffling of staff and reduction of operating hours for Chatham-Kent's ten arenas will see a combined savings of over $150,000.

Community Services Director Evelyn Bish says it's difficult to manage so many arenas that are so spread out. "It's a big project to take a look at, we don't have the density that other arenas do in other municipalities. We want to make sure that we're looking at efficiencies when [council is] looking at their budgets but we want to address the needs of the users as well."

The municipality will also look to outsource canteen services. Rental rates will also be increasing over a five-year period.
