Biotech Plant In Guelph Needs More Corn

A biotechnology plant in Guelph will need some more corn for its glycogen.

Mirexus Biotechnologies is starting up in Guelph and is pursuing a micro-filtration process that isolate's glycogen to be used in various products including personal care and cosmetics.

Construction started in late September and once up and running, the company will use up to 4,500 more tonnes of corn from Ontario growers over the next decade.

The federal government has invested $1 million in support in the new company.

Over the next 15 years, the global market for bioproducts is estimated to reach $200 billion dollars.

The Mirexus expansion in Guelph is also expected to create 72 full time jobs.
