Keep Up Demand Important To Growing Pork Industry

Canadian and U.S. hog production are only slightly ahead of last year's pace.

Scott Brown of the University of Missouri notes that still means another record year of production.

He says, since numbers are increasing, keeping up the demand for pork both domestically and globally is ever important.

Agriculture and Agri-food Canada reports our nation's pork exports for the early part of 2017 are down by 6.6 per cent from a year ago.

Exports to China continue to grow, as they're up 11 per cent, but the amount of pork headed to the States -- our biggest trade partner -- is down by 17 per cent.

AAFC also notes total fresh and frozen pork imports for the first quarter are up by 11 points as well, while imports coming from the U.S. have climbed by 19 per cent.
