Mexico Trying To Keep Up With Its Own Pork Demands

Mexican pork consumers are wondering if they'll still be able to get cheap meat after NAFTA talks are done.

Over the last three years, the price of beef has gone up by about 50 cents a pound while pork prices have remained stable.

That trend is driving pork sales.

Estimates from the CME indicate Mexican pork consumption has grown by 8.5 per cent from 2015.

They also show imports are set to make up 65 per cent of all consumed pig meat this year.

Mexico is expanding pig inventories to boost supplies for its own citizens.

Inventories to start this year were at 10.7 million head, about 8 per cent more than a year earlier.

Mexico's breeding stock currently includes 1.21 million sows, its largest amount in over 20 years.
