Winter Wheat At Risk Of Freeze Damage

After several weeks of roller coaster temperatures, winter wheat growers should be watching their crops carefully.

Agronomist Jason Kelly says with the recent cold snap and estimated growth stages, freeze damage may have occurred.

He adds damage could vary widely across a given field, depending on high and low areas.

Kelly also notes damage is highly dependent on growth stages and the duration of sub-zero temperatures.

Freeze damage doesn't appear immediately.

The agronomist points out it'll take a stretch of warm weather and good growing conditions to see the extent of any damage.

He says a few freeze-damaged leaves aren't much of an issue, but farmers should be concerned if the damage extends to the stem and head.
