OSCIA To Research Controlled Tile Drainage Benefits

The Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association has teamed up with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's AgriRisk Initiatives for a new program.

The project, called "Controlled Tile Drainage - Calculate Your Benefits" will research crop yield benefits of controlled tile drainage with scientists from the University of Ottawa.

OSCIA President Gord Green says there can be economic benefits to farmers who use controlled drainage in certain field conditions.

He notes under drought conditions, increases in corn yields have been found to be 25 per cent higher where water was retained to better supply the crop.

The association adds the project will run until the winter of 2018 and information will be provided to producers along the way.
