OCO Trying To Learn Why Organic Market Is Being Filled By Imports

The Organic Council of Ontario is wondering why more farmers aren't converting to organic farming to meet the increasing demand for organic products.

The Council has published a survey as part of a research project by Carolyn Young to find answers.

Young says her research shows some common barriers but further consultation needs to happen.

She adds the group is not only questioning why more farmers aren't making the switch, they also want to know why organic farmers aren't scaling up to fill the void.

OCO also notes demand for organic products is increasing at a rate of 14 per cent per year, and it's being filled by imports rather than local growers.

The survey is available for food producers and processors to take at www.organiccouncil.ca/grow-ontario-organic.
