World Soil Day Connects Producers With Fellow Citizens

World Soil Day is celebrated by the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization as well as smaller groups in individual countries, such as the Soil Conservation Council of Canada.

The SCCC says the day allows farmers to reconnect with fellow citizens to highlight the importance of soil to all.

SCCC Chair Paul Thoroughgood says the annual December 5th celebration provides a good chance for the group to tell its story of soil health.

He notes the complexity of dirt is often overlooked and underappreciated as it supports all life on the planet with minerals, bacteria, air, water, nutrients and organisms.

The council adds it's committed to working with all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to help build and implement best management practices to ensure the future sustainable soils.

Thoroughgood concludes its time citizens stop treating soil like dirt.
