PED Prevention Strategy Helping Farmers Fend Off Seneca Virus A

The strategies used by pig farmers in the fight against PED virus are helping to also control the risk of Seneca Virus A.

Mark Fynn, the Manager of Quality Assurance and Animal Care Programs for Manitoba Pork, says the big concern about Seneca Virus A is that it looks quite similar to foreign animal diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease.

He feels the pork industry's biosecurity efforts, such as disinfecting transport vehicles and heightened security on the farm, have helped to limit both viruses.

Eight truckloads of pigs have been rejected at the border since May as a result of PED and Seneca Virus.

Fynn notes delays of up to three days in such occasions can cause major disruptions throughout the industry.
