OMAFRA Cautioning Farmers Around Corn Silage

Corn silage harvest is underway in much of our area and OMAFRA wants you to use extra caution this year.

The ministry points out that this summer's drought has led to stressed corn.

During the last few weeks of rain, this year's crop has rapidly been absorbing nutrients, leading to higher than normal nitrate levels.

OMAFRA notes it's possible to test for nitrates, but numbers can vary wildly across any field.

They caution farmers to not linger near silos and bunkers while levels are elevated during fermentation.

Research shows gases may be present as soon as 12 hours after filling and remain until fermentation is complete.

The ministry also wants producers to be careful of nitrates around silo rooms and chutes for 2-3 weeks following filling.

The field crop team adds this year's lack of rain is making it tough to determine moisture levels.

They feel proper whole plant moisture is the most important element in good packing and fermentation.
