AAFC also shows a 9 per cent increase from 2015 in the number of feeder pigs exported to the U.S. Conversly, barrow, gilt and sow exports south are down nearly 7 per cent.

Ron Plain of the University of Missouri says last week's U.S. hog slaughter was down 1.1 per cent from the week prior.

The 2.27 million head were up nearly 2 per cent from a year ago.

Plain notes of the four largest slaughter weeks ever recorded in August, three have come this year.

He also points out the U.S. number of hogs slaughtered is up .4 per cent for 2016, but overall pork production is down .2 per cent due to lighter weights.

Plain adds hog futures were slightly lower last week, with October down 60 cents.
