Ontario, National Hog Slaughter Up So Far This Year

Canadian hog slaughter so far this year is up 1 point 3 per cent from a year ago.

Ontario's hog slaughter volume is in line with that at 1 point 4 per cent higher.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reports live hog exports to the U-S are up 6 per cent so far this year.

That includes an almost 7 per cent reduction in barrow/gilt and sow exports and a 9 point 4 per cent increase in feeder pig shipments.

The University of Missouri's Ron Plain says American hog slaughter was down almost 14 per cent last week from the week before.

However, he points out last week included the Independence Day holiday.

Plain reports the national negotiated barrow and gilt price last Thursday was $77.19 per hundredweight - down a dollar 16 from the week before and 16 cents lower than a year ago.
