Ontario Soybeans Not Yet At Critical Stage For Rain

A soy bean specialist with OMAFRA says we haven't really had the heat or moisture that soy beans would like, but they are not at the critical stage yet.

Horst Bohner explains the ideal temperatures for beans would be about 28 degrees during the day and 24 at night.

But he says heat is not a critical issue at this point.

Rainfall has varied throughout Southern Ontario and some fields are very healthy while some in the Niagara Region are really struggling.

Bohner says the critical time is when the beans start to flower and we're just about at that point.

He says later into July and early August both moisture and heat will be significant factors.

Bohner adds the situation in parts of the Niagara Region is very critical because there is no moisture in the heavy clay fields.

For some farmers their only option is to plant about an inch deep and hope for rain.
