Lower Animal Production Costs Nudge Farm Inputs Down

The cost of farm inputs was down 1 and a half per cent in the fourth quarter of 2015 from the third quarter.

Statistics Canada says a 6 point 3 per cent drop in animal production inputs was the major factor in the overall drop.

Machinery and motor vehicle costs were down, crop production and general business costs were up while building costs were unchanged.

Ontario's 0 point 8 per cent decline was one of five provincial declines posted in the fourth quarter.

Year over year, Canadian farm input prices were up a tenth of a per cent from 2014.

A 3 point 3 per cent increase in general business costs and a 2 point 2 per cent increase in crop production costs nudged the overall average up.

Statscan says Ontario's 1 point 6 per cent increase, year-over-year, was the biggest increase among all the provinces.
