NFU Wants Feds To Re-Direct Ag Research Funding

The National Farmers Union wants the federal government to redirect all agricultural research funding towards public and independent third party research in the public interest.

That was part of the NFU's submission to the Commons Finance Committee during the commitee's pre-budget consultation process.

The submission also called on the budget to provide support for new and young farmers.

Some of the NFU's suggestions in that area include making effective, affordable financing programs available to new farmers and providing funding for farm apprenticeship programs and training.

The farm group also wants the government to reject both CETA's and the TPP's allocation of parts of Canada's supply managed commodities' markets to imports.

And the NFU argues Canadian farmers, farm workers, processing companies and consumers would all benefit from reinvestment in the Canadian fruit, vegetable and livestock-meat production and processing capacity across the country.

The federal budget is to be tabled in Parliament tomorrow (March 22nd).
