U-S Hog Producers Expected To Be Profitable This Year

Iowa State University figures suggest U-S hog producers earned a profit of just over 4 dollars per head for hogs marketed in February.

The University says that's after three months of losses.

Ron Plain's weekly Hog Outlook from the University of Missouri reports it looks like this year's U-S profits will average close to the almost 8 dollars a head the Iowa State figures calculated for 2015.

Plain says last Friday's national negotiated barrow and gilt price in the U-S was up 60 cents from the previous week.

U-S hog slaughter was down 0 point 2 per cent from the week before - 0 point 5 per cent lower than the same week a year ago.

Canadian federal hog slaughter for the week ending March 5th was up 4 point 2 per cent from a year ago.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada reports live hog exports to the U-S this year to February 27th were up 12 point 6 per cent from the same period in 2015.
