Canadian Hog Slaughter Volumes Close To Normal Last Week

Canadian hog slaughter volume is up 22 per cent for the first two weeks of 2016 from a year ago.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada figures suggest most of that came in the first week of the year.

For the week ending January 16th, Canadian hog slaughter was only up 1 point 8 per cent.

Here in Ontario, the slaughter volume is up almost 21 per cent for the first two weeks, but up only 0 point 3 per cent for the week ending January 16th.

Federal statistics have the Ontario weekly hog price for the week ending January 16th at 167.98, down almost 10 per cent from the same week in 2015.

Our exports of live hogs to the U-S to January 9th came to just over 122 thousand head - an increase of just under 43 per cent from the same period last year.
