U-S Hog Producers Lost Money In December

2015 was a profitable year for U-S pork producers.

According to Iowa State University estimates, Iowa farrow-to-finish producers averaged a profit of just under 8 dollars per hog marketed.

However, those same estimates suggest producers lost over 18 dollars for each hog they marketed in December.

Those figures were part of the University of Missouri's Ron Plain Hog Outlook.

That same outlook reports the national negotiated barrow and gilt price in the U-S last week was up a dollar 80 on the week.

Last week's U-S hog slaughter was 2 point 3 million head - down almost 3 per cent from the week before, but up 2 and a half per cent from the same week in 2015.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada says federal hog slaughter to the year ending January 9th was just over 440 thousand head.

That's up over 55 per cent from the same period in 2015.

The Ontario weekly hog price was down 12 point 3 per cent from the same week last year at $160.62.
