Drought conditions in parts of Western Canada may present an opportunity for Ontario cattlemen.
Brian Perillat with Canfax says the drought is likely going to pause plans to expand the Canadian cattle herd for another year.
He says it's also likely going to mean Ontario buyers will have less competition from Alberta feedlots in buying feeders from Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
However, Perillat points out U-S buyers have been in Western Canada buying cattle.
He thinks those buyers may provide some competition for buyers from Ontario.
While Perillat believes Western cattlemen are managing the dry weather, they're still likely going to end up selling off a few more cattle they had thought they'd be keeping.
That's why he's expecting those herd expansion plans to be put on hold until at least next year.
