Total Canadian Hog Production Up Over 3 Per Cent

Exports of Canadian pigs to the U-S are up over 13 per cent so far this year.

13 point 5 per cent, in fact, according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

The federal department says federal slaughter numbers to date are up 2 and a half per cent, while total pork production is 3 point 3 per cent higher than it was a year ago.

In the U-S - Ron Plain of the University of Missouri says last week's hog slaughter was up 12 per cent from the week before and up 11 point 7 per cent from the same week a year ago.

Plain reports the average live slaughter weight of barrows and gilts in Iowa-Minnesota last week was up about half a pound from the week before but down just over 5 pounds from a year ago.

Last week was the 15th consecutive week with U-S live slaughter weights lighter than the previous year.
