OMAFRA's Jeff Leal says the Local Food Report is a major milestone for Ontario's agri-food sector.
The report measures the province's progress in bringing local food to more tables across Ontario. The Local Food Act commits the government to an annual report on local food activities, goals and accomplishments. Leal says this week's inaugural report will help the province track future progress in meeting it's local food goals.
Among the actions highlighted in this first report is the setting of food literacy goals.
It also cites the tax credit for farmers making food donations to food banks and student nutrition programs and piloting a fundraising initiative for the province's schools involving Ontario grown fruits and vegetables.
