A local MPP says teachers should have to talk to their students about career opportunities in the agri-food sector.
Huron-Bruce's Lisa Thompson has introduced a private members motion calling for that discussion to be mandatory in Ontario's Grade 9 and 10 Guidance and Career Education Curriculum.
Thompson argues there are some wonderful opportunities in the sector.
If grade 9 and 10 students were made aware of those opportunities, she thinks more would be willing to shape their future education path in that direction.
She points out it would also help the agri-food sector meet the Premier's challenge of creating 120 thousand new jobs.
Thompson says there are post-secondary job programs in the agri-food sector at places like Conestoga, Ridgetown and Guelph which are going unfilled because young people aren't being made aware of them early enough.
