Provincial Legislation Opens Ag Production Insurance Options

The province has passed a bill that will allow more types of agricultural products to be covered by Ontario's production insurance program.

OMAFRA says the Agriculture Insurance Act 2015 will give the province more flexibility to work with industry partners to develop potential future production insurance plans for more sectors.

Production insurance is currently available for almost 90 commercially grown crops in Ontario.

This new act means it could now include things like beekeeping and pork production.

Ontario Pork Chair Amy Cronin says production insurance could be instrumental in providing stability against risks that are beyond the control of pork farmers.

Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency Chair Dennis Fischer calls it an encouraging step forward for sheep producers across the province.

Beef Farmers of Ontario President Bob Gordanier says the changes will provide new opportunities for the beef industry to develop innovative solutions to reduce production-related risks.
