Government Program Helped Hog Sector Deal With PED

The Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association put more than 7 point 4 million dollars into PED Biosecurity projects last year.

The Association was administering money from the federal and provincial governments through the PED Biosecurity Special Intake Funding Assistance Program that wrapped up late last year.

The projects included cleaning and disinfecting equipment and facilities and building or improving Danish entry systems.

OSCIA says 93 per cent of the project claims came from hog producers - the rest from truckers, abattoir operators, assembly facility owners and renderers.

Most of the projects were completed in Huron, Perth, Oxford, Lambton and Middlesex counties.

The Association reports almost half the participants used the available funding to make two or more improvements to their operations.
