Project Aims For Goat Cost Of Production Tool

Ontario Goat has launched a new, three-year project reflects the evolution of the provincial dairy goat industry.

The Diary Goat Cost of Production and Benchmarking Study will create a Cost of Production tool through industry collaboration during a pilot study.

It will also help establish a benchmarking system that can be used as a financial management tool by all dairy goat farmers and industry partners.

This year's dairy goat milk production is expected to close in on 40 million litres.

That's a 10 million litre increase over the past five years.

Ontario Goat officials say the sector is transitioning from a niche market to a mainstream commodity market, impacting pricing and margins.

Ontario Goat President Anton Slingerland says future margins for producers will be made more on volume and production efficiencies.

The Dairy Goat Cost of Production and Benchmarking Study is getting funding support through Growing Forward 2.
