One of the guest speakers at a recent Ag. Ambitions mini-conference says families tend to dance around difficult issues in the process of farm transitions so she tries to help them discuss the un-discussable.
Elaine Froese points out they're losing money by not addressing those difficult issues and explains some farmers are afraid of loss of wealth, some are afraid of power and control and some are just afraid of conflict.
Froese adds farmers first have to decide if they really want to retire and some don't.
So she focuses on the three Cs -- Clarity of expectation …. what to you expect your role to be going forward; what are your Certainties of agreements and time lines; and then Commitment to act.
Froese also stresses the importance of having a will.
