Province Sets Target For Reduced Neo-Nic Use

The provincial government wants to cut the number of acres planted with neo-nic treated corn and soybean seed.

The target is an 80 per cent reduction by 2017.

A joint statement from OMAFRA and the Ministry of Environment says the long-term goal is the reduction of over-winter honeybee mortality rate to 15 per cent by 2020.

The statement points out the federal Pest Management Regulatory Agency has found a link between planting corn and soybean seeds treated with neonics and bee deaths in Ontario.

The government has released a discussion paper on pollinator health on Ontario's Environmental and Regulatory Registries.

It's open for comment for 60 days.

The government is also planning consultation sessions for December and January to seek input from industry, researchers, organizations and individuals.
