Statscan: Many Farmers Using Alternative Pest Control Methods

A recent Statistics Canada report includes a review of how farmers are managing the environment in their operations.

That included the use of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.

Statscan says that in 2011, 69 per cent of the country's crop farms reported applying herbicides - 15 per cent used insecticides - and 23 per cent used fungicides.

But the numbers agency reports Canadian farmers are also using an umber of alternative methods of pest control.

Based on 2011 figures, 55 per cent of the country's crop farms used crop rotation to disrupt pest cycles.

Ontario was one of the leading provinces in that pest control method.

And a number of farmers made capital investments in 2011 connected to the environment.

Statscan says among that group, producers invested an average of just under 7 thousand dollars on environmental protection improvements, almost 48 thousand on manure storages construction and over 17 thousand on pesticide, chemical and fuel storage construction.

Quebec and Manitoba farmers reported the highest average spending on manure storage construction in 2011.

Alberta farmers, on average, outspent their counterparts on pesticide, chemical and fuel storage construction.
