Barley, Oat Growers Vote Deadline Monday

Ontario oat and barley producers have until next Monday to return their ballots on joining Grain Farmers of Ontario.

The Farm Products Marketing Commission is conducting the vote.

The Chair of the Oat and Barley Representation Committee, Craig Martin, describes it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for oat and barley farmers.

He says this would be the first time these crops had representation in Ontario.

The proposed plan would cover all oat and barley growers in Ontario.

However, only oats, barley and mixed grain marketed commercially to elevators and processors would be assessed license fees.

On-farm use and farm-to-farm sales would be exempt - similar to how Grain Farmers of Ontario operates now with it's growers.

GFO represents 28 thousand corn, soybean and wheat farmers in the province.
