80-90 Per Cent Of Ontario Corn Yet To Be Harvested

Ontario corn growers aren't were they would like to be with this year's harvest.

OMAFRA's Greg Stewart says only about 10-20 per cent of the crop is off so far.

He says growers should be able to deal with this year's vomitoxin levels, even though they're higher than they've been the past couple of years.

High moisture levels will also be a concern with this year's corn crop.

Stewart says it's going to take drying at somewhat lower temperatures to boost the quality of the corn once it's off the fields.

Despite the harvesting problems, he's optimistic about the yields.

Stewart says the crop went through the summer with virtually no moisture stress and both the pollination and kernal count were good.

He predicts quality and drying costs will be the main issues for Ontario corn growers for the next 5 weeks or so.

While a recent survey suggests vomitoxin levels will be higher this year than they have been in the past couple of years, Stewart thinks it's something farmers can deal with.

Stewart says if you've got 36 per cent moisture levels in your crop there may be some merit in letting it sit over the winter.
