Knight's fundraiser restocks Chatham food bank shelves

The Local Knights of Columbus, Council 1412, were out in force recently, raising support for the Chatham food bank.

Members from the Knights of Columbus (KOC) Councils of the Chatham Catholic Family of Parishes and the Blessed Sacrament Parish collected over 217 banana boxes, or about 13,000 pounds of food, for the Chatham-Kent Salvation Army over a three-day long donation drive from September 14 to 16.

Over the three days, volunteers were able to raise an additional $6,100 for the food bank.

On Friday, September 22, the Knights of Council 1412 presented the Salvation Army with gift cards from Food Basics and the Real Canadian Superstore in the amount of money raised at each location.

"We are so grateful for the continuing generosity of the people of our Chatham Kent communities to provide for the needy of our community," said co-organizer Steve Brent. "What a blessing this was for the Council 1412's charity of choice."

Brent said all of the council's events have benefited the Salvation Army of Chatham-Kent with the expectation of some perishable items being provided to the Chatham-Kent Women's Centre.

The inaugural food and fundraiser in 2022 raised 35 banana boxes, or 2,000 pounds of food, with an additional $1,466.

The most recent food drive, held this past Spring, brought in over $4,300 in donations for the food bank.
