66-year-old charged after standoff in Listowel

An incident that brought a heavy police presence to Listowel late Wednesday night ended with a 66-year-old being arrested.

Perth OPP were called to a home on Derry Street East around 9:30 p.m. for a person in distress. The individual reportedly barricaded themself inside the residence.

Officers cordoned off the area with the help of the OPP West Region emergency response team and canine unit. Crisis negotiators were brought in to help resolve the issue.

Police reassured there was no threat to public safety, but people were asked to avoid the area.

A 66-year-old North Perth resident was arrested shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday. That person is charged with one count of uttering threats to damage property.

The accused will remain in custody pending a bail hearing, police said.
