A Chatham-Kent resident will be the next head coach of the St. Clair Saints women's softball team.
Wheatley native Dwayne Dawson will take over the job from Doug Wiseman, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
Dawson had been the team's assistant coach for the past five years, helping the Saints win two national championships.
He told CK News Today that this new role will be a highlight of his career.
"Getting the chance to lead a college program, a distinguished college program that has had a lot of success... it ranks right up there," he said.
Dawson's career spans multiple decades. Before joining the Saints, Dawson already had 14 years of coaching experience in the Windsor area. He won three national championships during this time, one at the U14 level and two at the U16 level.
"I've played at various levels all my life, and this is just a new chapter. I've enjoyed (coaching) all the way up from some of the youngest age groups, added Dawson.
Moving forward, he believes the Saints will continue to showcase some of the best softball in the country.
"We've got girls as far away as B.C., we have had girls who've went to play in the United States and then returned back to Canada," Dawson explained.
He noted it speaks volumes about the talent in the Windsor and Chatham-Kent areas, as half of last season's roster were local kids.
